Introduction
Logipad is a state-of-the-art EFB solution (Electronic Flight Bag) that guarantees flexible and scalable information handling for pilots on ground and in the air. The implementation of an EFB requires several types of components and products. It also needs to meets several challenges like implementing all pieces and moving them into operation.
Hardware
Each EFB contains one physical hardware device. There are three different device classes in the definition of EFB:
Class-I devices are mobile laptop devices that have no connectivity to the cockpit and are treated as Less-Paper Cockpit (LPC) solutions by authorities. Therefore, any usage below 10.000 feet is not allowed in the cockpit.
Moreover, Class-I laptops give full flexibility to provide all operations to the pilots. In addtition to in-flight operations, the airline can handle training, documentation, communication and other flight preparation services. Furthermore, Class-I devices are considered as low cost devices and are easy to replace.
Class-II devices are mounted and physically connected to the cockpit, as they can be used at all phases of the flight. The authorities handle them as paperless solutions, which do not require paper backups.
Only certified airline hardware can be used. Furthermore, one of the great benifits is that the pilots can access displayed information on the cockpit.
Class-III devices are built-in appliances in the cockpit, placed by the aircraft vendors. These devices have the full ability to read and write information.
Software
Different applications are required to provide relevant content on the devices. There are several airline software applications such as charting, performance, documentation, reporting or eTechLog.
The more applications/contents the airline includes on the device, the more cost saving and useful the solution will become.
Update
The combination of EFB devices and different applications leads the airline to different challenges:
- How to update and maintain the applications on the devices?
- How to guarantee that only proven and tested updates are sent to the devices?
- How to prove that the updates have been installed on all relevant devices?
Logipad gives a solution to the customer that resolves these issues reliably.
